It has now been nearly two years since Kendrick Lamar released To Pimp A Butterfly, the album was loved by fans and received widespread critical acclaim.
The album was a welcome departure from the hard raps of Good Kid, M.A.A.D City atop atmospheric beats influenced by West-Coast rap. Kendrick with To Pimp A Butterfly freed himself from the shackles of modern hip-hop. The album’s production was heavily influenced by Jazz, free funk and spoken word. In certain instances on the album you feel as though Kendrick is reciting poetry rather than rapping, this is particularly present at the beginning of ‘Alright’. Aside from the adventurous production, Kendrick tackled a plethora of social and political themes. From depression and suicidal thoughts in ‘u’ to tackling problems of race and the flawed justice system in America on ‘Institutionalised’. Kendrick showed with him at the helm of a mic he can tackle more than the generic raps of money, car and clothes.
When is his new album going to be released?
On March 23rd, eagle eyed Kendrick fans noticed that he had deleted everything from his Instagram account except one cryptic post with the Roman numerals. Many have interpreted this to mean his new album will be released on April 7th, which has been fuelled by the last line on new release ”The Heart Part 4′,”Y’all got ’til the 7th of April to get y’all shit together”. Most rap fans know that release dates are usually just suggestions by the artist and we should not be surprised if come April 14th the album is still not out. In other news Detox will be out next week…
Listen to The Heart Part 4 here.
What to expect:
Themes of religion
In a statement to the New York Times magazine Kendrick stated:
“I think now, how wayward things have gone within the past few months, my focus is ultimately going back to my community and the other communities around the world where they’re doing the groundwork.
“To Pimp a Butterfly was addressing the problem. I’m in a space now where I’m not addressing the problem any more.
“We’re in a time where we exclude one major component out of this whole thing called life: God.
“Nobody speaks on it because it’s almost in conflict with what’s going on in the world when you talk about politics and government and the system.”
Up until now Kendrick has only mentioned religion in passing, could we be getting a more soulful Kendrick. And if we do we should expect an appearance from Kanye West. Kanye in his discography has made many religious themed songs. Jesus walks being one of the most famous. Also Kanye has shown he can still make a good rap gospel song, check out ‘Ultralight beams’.
It is no secret that Kendrick is in a different space creatively, many wish for him to return to his GKMC style, however, Kendrick is now above being the kid from Compton narrating his life. He has gotten the attention he yearned for and now he has a platform from which to deliver his message. This is why we should expect Kendrick to have something to say about the current state of America, starting with you Donald Trump.
Kendrick with all his releases has always chased a different sound. Sonically Overly dedicated, Section 80, To pimp… and GKMC are all very different. Kyle Anderson of Entertainment weekly saod of To Pimp… it embraced “the entire history of black American music”. We should expect this new album to introduce a new sound to Kendrick’s discography.
