This Is Our Second Instalment In The Series Books Every Gentleman Should Read.
With the news that Michael Shannon and Michael B. Jordan have been cast in HBO’s TV movie adaptation of the classic novel of the same title Fahrenheit 451. We recommend that you read the book first before the watching the movie to get the whole picture.
Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel by Ray Bradbury, published in 1953. The book gets its title from the tag line of the book: “Fahrenheit 451 – the temperature at which book paper catches fire, and burns …”.When the book was first released author Ry Bradbury said he got inspiration from the climate at the time in America during the McCarthy era. Recently Bradbury has said that the social media revolution has given the book a new meaning. In today’s mass media world, we are more interested in quick information through tweets and Facebook updates, there is no longer a large interest in reading literature.
The novel looks at an America were reading has been made illegal and firemen regularly burn any books they find. The people in this society do not read books, enjoy nature, spend time by themselves, think independently, or have meaningful conversations. Instead, they drive very fast, watch excessive amounts of television on wall-size sets, and listen to the radio on “Seashell Radio” sets attached to their ears. When you read the novel you notice the similarities between the dystopian society and that of our current society.
If you need anymore convincing this book has won the American Academy of Arts and Letters in Literature, it has also won one of the four Retro Hugo awards. If you don’t want to read the novel the audio book was honoured with a Spoken Word Grammy nomination in 1976.
