Soft drinks giant Pepsi have sparked controversy with their latest advert starring Kendall Jenner.
Pepsi new ad shows Kardashian family member, as a leading Civil Rights activist. The vision behind this ad being that with a Pepsi can and pretty girl pretty much any conflict in the world can be ended and people will all get along. The ad was pulled on Wednesday after public backlash against the company downplaying the multiple protest that against police brutality in America.
In a statement, a Pespsi spokesperson said this in regards to the ad:
“Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize,” Pepsi wrote in a statement on Wednesday. “We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are removing the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position.”
The ad which only lasted twenty-four hours, showed Kendell Jenner in the middle of a photo shoot. She notices that there is commotion outside in the street which turns out to be a protest. It’s not clear what the smiling, attractive demonstrators are upset about, the only clues being their placards reading “peace” and “love” and “join the conversation.”
Kendell the joins in the protest after being beckoned by a handsome man with Cello, she rips of her blonde wig and wipes of her make-up and takes a leading role in the protest. The protest seems to be a happy affair with the police being peaceful and all round good vibes.
In the climax of the ad, Kendall picks up a can of Pepsi from a bucket filled with them the proceeds to walk towards an officer. She offers him a Pepsi, and he accepts. To the surprise of his fellow officer he takes a sip and everyone cheers, and in the corner someone even ‘dabs’.
Many are bashing the ad because it makes light of racial protest in America all for the sake of Pepsi to sell make more profit in the summer.
Pepsi said the film, titled “Jump In,” was produced by PepsiCo’s in-house content creation arm, Creators League Studio.
The company said the ad “features multiple lives, stories and emotional connections that show passion, joy, unbound and uninhibited moments.” They also said the advert “truly reflects today’s generation and what living for now looks like”, and that Kendall is a pioneer for ‘Live For Now’. Yes Pepsi, a member of the Kardashians who spends her whole day snapping and instagramming everything she does is really living in the moment.
As such social media , has punished Pepsi for their silliness:
