‘Game Of Throne’s’ Creators next series will be about an America where slavery never ended.

Game Of Thrones is now entering its final stages, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are now leaving the world of ice and fire behind. Their new show will take place in the land of the free, HBO announced that they have have gotten a series order for a drama called Confederate

The new show will be set in an America where the Southern states successfully seceded from the Union and slavery is a part of modern life, leaving the country on the brink of a third Civil War.

According to HBO Benioff and Weiss have been developing the idea for years, initially intending to take the concept to the big screen. However, they decided against it, in a joint statement they said HBO was the right place for the series.  “Our experience on Thrones has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO.”

The series will explore the tensions between the United States and the Confederate States of America, with characters living on either side of what’s known as the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone.  The cast will feature freedom fighters, abolitionists, journalists, and, of course, slaves and slave owners. Working on the show will be Benioff and Weiss as executive producers and they will be joined by Nichelle Tramble Spellman (The Good Wife) and Malcolm Spellman (Empire).

The concept for Confederate is very intriguing, it seems like a response to a recent crop of series like The Man in the High Castle and The Handmaid’s Tale, both are set in an alternate reality i which the villains of the world win.

HBO is courting controversy with its decision to greenlight this series, there are already arguments made about Hollywood being flooded with slave stories. Also, Benioff and Weiss have been critiqued about their treatment of people of colour on Game Of Thrones.
