AI Is Being Used For Fake Celebrity Porn And Political Speeches.

If you thought humans were going to use AI to make groundbreaking discoveries then you were wrong. As expected, humans have taken one of the most impressing technologies we have created and are using it not to improve peoples lives, but, people are making celebrity porn and fake Obama speeches. deepfakes

A redditor named deepfakes who started the phenomenon has been using his spare time and computer science background to face-swap celebrity faces onto porn performers’ bodies. Already, he has already targeted celebrities including Gal Gadot, Maisie Williams, and Taylor Swift—using a machine learning algorithm, his home computer, publicly available videos, and some spare time.

Deepfakes created a subreddit named after him which has garnered 15,000 supporters in a short period of time and the number of AI generated pornos being created has risen. This has created a new legal problem, photo-shopped pornographic images of celebrities have long existed on the internet, so this isn’t a surprisingly new phenomenon. Perverts have just got better at using technology to make their wildest dream come true.  Celebrities will struggle with stopping such a practice through defamation or copyright infringement laws, but according to The Verge their best bet is going after the sites that host the videos. Pornhub recently annouced  that they are going to stop hosting such videos.

Daisey Ridley has already had the AI treatment:

Deepfakes is not alone in his mission, another Reddit user who calls himself deepfakeapp created FakeApp, a user-friendly application that allows anyone to recreate these videos with their own datasets. The app is based on deepfakes’ algorithm, but deepfakeapp created FakeApp without the help of the original deepfakes.

Deepfakeapp has said:

“I think the current version of the app is a good start, but I hope to streamline it even more in the coming days and weeks,” he said. “Eventually, I want to improve it to the point where prospective users can simply select a video on their computer, download a neural network correlated to a certain face from a publicly available library, and swap the video with a different face with the press of one button.”

What is scary about this face-swapping phenomenon is its potentially undemocratic use in politics.  Fake news is already a problem, however, once people start using face-swapping with politicians we will be entering murky waters where the line between fake and reality will be blurred. A user named Z3ROCOOL22 combined footage of Hitler with Argentina’s president Mauricio Macri:

Deborah Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Applied Ethics at the University of Virginia’s school of engineering has said of the use of this technology: “It’s destabilizing. The whole business of trust and reliability is undermined by this stuff.”
