In 1904, the Santos watched was created and it ushered in a revolutionary design. 110 years later, its ideals of freedom, comfort and luxury are back.
The Santos watch is the most famous square cased watch and whilst the new Santos collection resembles its predecessor, its new refined look will appeal t the new generation of watch buyers.
In the 21st century, we are used to see round watches, but this has not always be the norm. The square shape of the Santos watch refinement and symmetry of Parisian geometry of the early 1900s – as seen, most notably perhaps, in the four-cornered Eiffel Tower.
The Santos case has been completely redesigned by Cartier, the most noticeable difference is that the case has been slimmed down making the watch look more sleek. However, what stays the same is Cartier’s iconic eight screws on the bezel, which according to our friends at the Gentleman’s Journal is a ‘miniature tribute to the proliferation of mechanical steel structures associated with a golden age of architecture’.
When it comes to the strap, Cartier have updated the iconic strap, with a new innovative strap that caters for the modern world. Straps are available in different materials, colours- from gold to alligators. Even better, all versions are interchangeable thanks to the Cartier QuickSwitch system hidden under the strap.
The most interesting feature on the new Santos collection is Cartier’s SmartLink self-fitting technology, which adjusts the length of the metal bracelet to the nearest link without the use of a tool.
Under the body the Santos is equipped with the reliable Cartier caliber 1847 MC automatic movement and the watch is water resistant up to 10 bar.
